Learn to install and maintain radio and telemetry systems

SCADA systems have been around for many decades. SCADA systems are in essence, special communication systems designed to interface master terminal units (MTU typically Citect, Wonderware, iFix etc.) and remote terminal units (RTU) over a communication path that can cover large distances.

Such systems are characterised by communication dropouts and slow communication data rates and consequently require special engineering and protocols. Our training course explains this system and compares it to more common process control systems. SCADA systems today are characterised by low speed open circuit communication components with traditional radio and telemetry interfacing. This course also introduces Ethernet radio and spread spectrum technologies.

  • Appreciating the components of a SCADA system.
  • Relating SCADA systems with respect to the Open Systems Interconnection model (OSI).
  • Realising that Citect, Wonderware, iFix etc are SCADA components (HMI) not systems.
  • Appreciating the low-speed characteristics of radio and telemetry systems.
  • Reviewing available technologies for design, operation and maintenance of SCADA systems.
  • Understanding the purpose and functioning of typical modems.
  • Understanding essential Radeon telemetry theory.
  • Setting up a basic radio data communication system.
  • Understanding the Difference between an RTU and PLC.
  • Understanding the spread spectrum technology present today in modern SCADA systems.
  • Appreciating modern SCADA protocols such as Modbus, DNP3, IEC 60870-5-101 etc.
  • Reviewing wireless networks including 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz, 5.8 GHz and 24 GHz licence free spectrum.
  • Setting up several RTUs with a data concentrator on a wireless network communicating to a plc over ethernet radio.
  • Using application software such as Trio TView to install, commission and monitor radio systems.
  • Writing PLC software to retrieve data over a radio network.
